Microsoft has made an exception to its rule to leave Windows XP unsupported by fixing the major security flaw affecting Internet Explorer.

Last week IE was discovered to have a serious vulnerability affecting the browser memory in all versions of the Internet Explorer. Windows XP was going to be left without the patch, as support for the OS stopped in April however Microsoft has decided to extend the fix to XP as the flaw was discovered just days after support ended. This is the first large-scale security issue Microsoft has had since support was discontinued.

As 1 in every 4 personal computers in the world is still using Windows XP, the number of users left vulnerable due to the flaw would have been enormous.
