Researchers from the University of Kent have discovered that two in five people who are affected by the CryptoLocker virus agreed to pay the ransom demanded. This is usually around £300 but can be as high as £1,350 in some cases.
The virus attacks through a corrupted attachment and encrypts the files on affected computers before demanding a ransom for recovery. The only way to recover the files without paying is from a backup. A large number of computer users have never backed their files up, or do so rarely, which leaves many with no other choice than to hand over the large sums of money.
