Thousands of users could not access the site, designed to organise social events or contact other users. Meetup HQ has maintained an ongoing blog to keep its customers informed of the developments. The source of the attack is unknown, however, the CEO of Meetup received an email warning him that ‘A competitor asked me to perform a DDoS attack on your website. I can stop the attack for $300 USD.’ After refusing to pay, the attack began and continued until Monday, when technicians resolved the issue.

The site now appears to be stable. Meetup Users are assured that all of their login data and credit card information remains secure.
