Developers at Liverpool University have created a computer virus that spreads via wi-fi like a “common cold”.
The virus would be most dangerous in densely populated areas, where it could spread through the networks and find weaknesses. The virus seeks out wi-fi access points that have not changed their default passwords and install firmware that takes control of the system. Through the corrupted network, hackers could monitor data and personal information, but could also find other vulnerable networks to spread the virus. Researchers are keeping the technical details of the virus quiet, to ensure that real cyber-criminals cannot use the attack on the public.
The developers are now using their findings to create software that protects users from this type of virus. Changing a default password is the most basic level of security required to protect from this: researchers believe that a product installed at the access point could prevent this completely.
