The Head of Europol’s cybercrime centre has issued a warning to the public, advising them that the number of attacks being carried out over public wi-fi networks is increasing.

This is down to members of the public who use the wi-fi in coffee shops or hotspots to send personal data, shop online or access their banks and social media. In public wi-fi networks, this information can be monitored and accessed as the security levels are often low.

These techniques are well known to police and are easily preventable, however, the public is often unaware that anything sent over this kind of connection is vulnerable.  It is safer to access banks or emails within a trusted network where security is higher.
