Technology has finally caught up with that most traditional sporting event, The Tour de France. From 2015, the action will go beyond cameras on motorcycles and helicopters and embrace big data, with a live web feed offered to millions of fans showing each rider’s GPS location, speed and proximity to rivals, all using saddle sensors. It’s more than dry data

But beyond spotting a favoured rider or two, who needs this information? On mountain stages, time gaps become critical. Normally fans can see the front of the race but where other riders are behind the leading contenders is anyone’s guess, especially in bad weather.
