The developer of the SpyEye Trojan, Aleksandr Andreevich Panin, has pleaded guilty to his charges of banking and wire fraud.

The Trojan was released in 2009, and used to create a network designed to gather financial details from internet users worldwide. The malware involved is some of the most invasive, capable of stealing identity and money from unsuspecting users. It is believed that over 1.4 million computers were affected over the time the virus was active, compromising over 10,000 bank accounts. The software was sold on underground online marketplaces for thousands of dollars at a time.

An FBI statement said: “The apprehension of Mr. Panin means that one of the world’s top developers of malicious software is no longer in a position to create computer programs that can victimize people around the world.”
