Security researchers have discovered that Microsoft has been delivering incomplete patches to all but its newest operating systems.

Whilst developing a program that scanned for differences in patches, it was noticed that there were discrepancies. When comparing the updates, researchers noticed that a number of security functions were only sent to Windows 8, leaving Windows 7 less secure and open to zero day vulnerabilities. The missing functions were found in libraries that helped combat attacks.

Researcher Moti Joseph suggested that Microsoft had not applied fixes to Windows 7 to save money. “Microsoft does not want to waste development time on older operating systems … and they want people to move to higher operating systems.”

Microsoft has not yet commented on the issues.
