The ransomware Cryptolocker has returned to the news as the NCA (National Crime Agency) have declared a “unique, two-week opportunity to rid and safeguard”  ourselves from Cryptolocker.

Crypto locker holds computers to ransom by encrypting files and demanding a large amount of money for the return of files. Over 15,000 British computers have already been affected, with thousands of pounds stolen. Some scams refuse to return files even after ransoms have been paid.

The only way to avoid this is to have a reliable, secure backup.

The NCA has not provided any details on the two-week reprieve, however, it is likely that servers have been taken down. Until these are back up, those affected by Cryptolocker will not lose their files.
