BT is under investigation by the Information Commissioners Office after claims that user details were exposed ‘en masse’.
The issue has come to light as over seven million email accounts are being moved from Yahoo to BT by the company Critical Path. A whistleblower, thought to have been a previous employee of the company, is claiming that the methods used are not secure. The ICO’s preliminary documents state that ‘the evidence provided to us indicates that British Telecoms customer email accounts were being compromised by spammers/scammers on a daily basis and that BT was aware of this.’
British Telecoms continues to deny the allegations, claiming that the issue is with Yahoo accounts, and the two companies are in correspondence. The ICO will make its decision once BT has fairly explained its actions to a watchdog.
