Google has updated Chrome with 50 patches to solve a huge security issue. This is an enormous update compared to the usual small changes, and comes after a $30,000 reward was given to a researcher who discovered multiple flaws.
The security vulnerabilities would have created a chain reaction that would have led to attackers being allowed to leave Chrome’s security walls and execute code remotely. It required fixes in Google’s V8 JavaScript engine, inter-process comms, sync feature and extensions.
The $30,000 reward is the highest offered by Google for vulnerability discovery. Selling the details of the patch on the deep web would have brought in much more, and caused problems worldwide. It is therefore very important that those who use Chrome update quickly as the details have now been released.
The update updated to 64 bit, which improves the graphics and decreases the likelihood of the browser crashing. It also removes Silverlight, replacing it with an internal version of Flash to avoid Silverlight’s popularity with attackers.
